Part 1

Work or Study

Do you work or are you a student?

I graduated a few months ago and I'm now in full-time employment.

What work do you do?

I currently work as a software engineer at Microsoft.

Do you like your job?

Yea, most of the time. I had interned there for a few months last year, then now I am full-time. I could program something to solve real-world problems and my co-workers are nice.

Why did you choose to do that type of work (or, that job)?

This choice was made out of interest. I have been passionate about computers, softwares and Internet technologies since I was a child. I can control every single electronic component to command the computer if I want, to accomplish any task. I also think the cyber world is amazing because there I can reach every corner of the world with such a short delay.

Do you miss being a student?

It's hard to tell which one, work or study, is a better life. However, I absolutely miss being a student. During that period of time, I could rarely worry about making a living and absorbed the knowledge with full attention at such a fast pace.

What subjects are you studying?

I just graduated from the university and recieved my master's degree a few months ago. I majored in Computer Science and studied a large number of subjects such as data structures, algorithms, operating systems, advanced image processing, etc.

Why did you choose to study that subject (or, those subjects)?

Because these subjects were quite helpful in enriching my understanding of how computers actually work. While in advanced image processing, I learned a fair amount of stuffs directly related to daily life, about capturing and processing photos. It was interesting.

Do you like your subject?

Yes, I find them helpful and interesting, and I can have a lot of fun learning the subjects.

Do you prefer to study in the mornings or in the afternoons?

It depends on the situation. I don't really care when I study. I prefer to study when a fascinating idea comes to my mind, or when I feel full of energy to research something new. While pursuing my master's degree, on some nights when inspiration hit me, I might stay up late to continue studying or programming.

Are you looking forward to working?

Of course, because I can earn a living on my own and I will have the opportunity to create something that can be delivered to real customers.

What's the name of your hometown?

My hometown is Tianjin, which is located in the southeast of the capital Beijing.

Is that a big city or small place?

It is one of the largest cities in China and is directly administered by the central government.

Please describe your hometown a little. How long have you lived there?

In fact, I had lived there for over 20 years since I was born. Even the university where I received both my bachelor's and master's degree is located in Tianjin. Until a few months ago, I moved to Beijing because of my job. Tianjin is kinda smaller than Beijing, but I like it not only because it is my hometown, but also because there are many attractions to visit, such as the Italian style street and the ancient culture street, and the kind and simple people.
